Preparing for the New Financial Year: Your Small Business Checklist for a Strong Start
21st April 2026January is usually associated with cold weather and the dreaded tax deadline. But for the savviest business owners (and their accountants!), tax season actually starts in the spring.
Filing your Self Assessment early is the closest thing to a “cheat code” for your finances. Here is why getting ahead of the game is the smartest move you can make this year.
1. You know your bill (but you don’t have to pay it yet)
This is the one of the biggest misconceptions we hear. Filing your return in May or June does not mean you have to pay HMRC right away. Your tax bill is still due on 31st January. By filing early, you get months of clarity. You know exactly what you owe, so you can set the money aside comfortably rather than scrambling in the New Year.
2. Better cash flow management
When you know your liability early, you can plan your business spend. If you have a larger bill than expected, you have six months to adjust your budget. If you are due a refund, you get that money back in your pocket much sooner. Why let HMRC hold onto your cash? If you have a payment on account in July and you’ve earned less than the previous year, this payment could also decrease, saving you having to pay more and get a refund at a later date.
3. Fewer mistakes, more savings
Rushed tax returns lead to errors. When you are up against the clock on 30 January, it is easy to miss valid expenses or tax reliefs. Filing early gives us the time to look at your figures properly and ensure you are not paying a penny more than you should.
4. Reclaim your January
Imagine a January where you aren’t hunting for receipts or worrying about HMRC logins (or being nagged by your accountant). By getting your tax return sorted now, you can actually enjoy the festive break and start the New Year with a clear head.
