10 Steps to Getting Your Finances in Order
20th March 2026It is so easy to fall into the trap of performing “busy-ness.” We wear it like a medal, don’t we? If someone asks how we are, the default answer is usually a weary “Oh, you know, flat out.”
I see this constantly in my work at Seed. I specialise in helping micro business owners, the people who are the heart and soul of their own operations. Most of my clients did not start their businesses to work 80-hour weeks. They started them to gain ownership of their time.
They wanted to be there for the school run, spend months travelling, or finally find the headspace for a hobby. Yet, somewhere along the line, the “busy-ness” badge of honour takes over. We start to feel guilty if we aren’t constantly grinding.
If you are feeling the weight of that badge, it is time to take it off.
The myth of the hustle
We are told that if we aren’t busy, we aren’t growing. This is a myth that hurts micro businesses more than most. I fell into this trap myself recently. I tried to squeeze more into my days, starting at 8:00 am and pushing through until 6:30 pm. I thought that by doing more, I’d achieve more.
Instead, I just ended up tired and unproductive. My brain felt like it was running through treacle. I eventually had to make a change. I moved back to “normal” hours and communicated with my clients when timeframes needed to shift. The world didn’t end. In fact, my work got better because I was actually awake for it.
The Instagram rabbit hole
One of the biggest “busy” habits I see right now is the obsession with marketing. People get bogged down in creating the perfect Instagram page or filming reels that take hours to edit. While marketing matters, it shouldn’t drain your soul.
Doing a brilliant job for your existing clients is the best marketing you can do. Word of mouth is far more efficient than a viral video. If you are spending three hours on a transition for a reel but haven’t checked in with your top client this month, your priorities have slipped. The mantra I stick to is: It’s easier to sell to existing clients, than selling to new ones.
Doing vs. Deciding
When you spend all your time “doing” the work, you have no time left for the strategy. You end up firefighting. You react to every email and every minor drama as if it’s an emergency.
I often talk to my clients about Covey’s time matrix (you can read more about that in our other blog post here). If you spend your whole life in the “urgent” box, you never get to the “important” box. That is where the planning and the big ideas live. Without that time, your business will eventually plateau.
Let technology do the heavy lifting
At Seed, we believe accounting should be about more than just tax returns. It should be about reclaiming your freedom. We love tools that take the “busy” out of your day.
- Dext: This is a game-changer for processing purchase invoices. Stop manually entering data and reduce human error.
- Xero: Our go-to for making business life easier.
- Coconut: If you are a smaller sole trader, this is even simpler and brilliantly effective.
Then there is AI. Some people hate it, some love it, but we take an “accept and adapt” approach. Whether it is helping with routine emails or drafting a basic report, AI can save you hours of admin. It is a tool to help you stay ahead of the game, not something to fear.
Reclaiming your “why”
Success isn’t about how much you can cram into a day. It is about how much life you can fit around your work. If your business is eating up every spare second, it isn’t serving its purpose. You have traded a 9 to 5 boss for a 24/7 one (yourself). That is a bad deal.
Let’s change the conversation. Instead of bragging about how little sleep we got, let’s celebrate the afternoon we spent in the garden. Let’s be proud of the fact that the business ran smoothly while we were off-grid.
If you are ready to stop being “busy” and start being intentional, we are here to help. We handle the numbers so you can get back to the things that actually matter.
