How do I use Xero to track my personal ‘Freedom Fund’ goals?

Answer: Most people view Xero as a tool for the taxman, but with a few simple tweaks, it becomes your personal “Freedom Dashboard.” To track your progress toward a specific lifestyle goal (like a 3-month sabbatical or a house deposit), we recommend using Tracking Categories.

Here is the 3-step setup:

  1. Create a “Freedom” Tracking Category: In your Xero settings, set up a category labeled “Life Goals.” Add options like Sabbatical Fund, School Fees, or Investment Pot.
  2. Tag Your Distributions: Every time you take a dividend or a draw from the business specifically for that goal, tag the transaction to that category.
  3. Run a “Tracking Summary” Report: You can then run a report at any time to see exactly how much you’ve “paid your future self” year-to-date.

Pro Tip for 2026: Use the Xero Budget Manager to set a “reverse budget.” Instead of just tracking what you spent, set a monthly goal for your “Owners Draw” and use the Budget vs. Actual report to ensure your business is actually funding the life you planned.
